About This Tour
The Umbwe route is a short, steep and direct route. It is considered to be very difficult and is the most challenging way up Mount Kilimanjaro. Due to the quick ascent, Umbwe does not provide the necessary stages for altitude acclimatization. Although the traffic on this route is very low, the chances of success are also low. The route is offered at a minimum of six days, though seven days is recommended when attempting this route. The Umbwe route should only be attempted by those who are very strong hikers and are confident in their ability to acclimatize. However, overall, the Umbwe route is not recommended and we discourage its usage for our clients.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Umbwe Gate → Umbwe Cave Camp
After breakfast in Moshi, you will be driven to Umbwe Gate for registration and final briefing by Kilimanjaro National Park authorities. The trek begins immediately through dense tropical rainforest with steep and challenging ascents. Along the way, you may spot wildlife such as colobus monkeys and a variety of bird species. The trail is scenic but demanding, leading you steadily upward to Umbwe Cave Camp, where you will enjoy dinner and overnight camping.
Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp – Barranco Camp
After breakfast, you will continue your ascent from Umbwe Cave Camp into the moorland zone. The trail becomes less steep compared to Day 1 but remains challenging as you gain altitude steadily. You will enjoy stunning views of the Western Breach and the Kibo peak as you traverse ridges and valleys. By afternoon, you arrive at Barranco Camp, one of the most scenic camps on Kilimanjaro, where you will rest, have dinner, and overnight in tents.
Day 3: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp
After breakfast, you depart Barranco Camp and begin the ascent of the famous Barranco Wall, a thrilling non-technical climb that rewards you with incredible views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s glaciers and valleys. After reaching the top, you continue trekking across ridges and alpine desert terrain with gradual ups and downs toward Karanga Camp, an important acclimatization point. Upon arrival, you will rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the higher altitude ahead.
Day 4: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp
After breakfast, continue your ascent through the alpine desert zone toward Barafu Camp, the base camp for your summit attempt. The trail is dry, rocky, and demanding as you gain significant altitude. Upon arrival, you will rest early, have dinner, and prepare for the midnight summit push to Uhuru Peak.
Day 5: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp
Around midnight, begin your summit attempt through steep scree and ice paths toward Stella Point and onward to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement and taking photos, descend carefully back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for overnight camping.
Day 6: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi
After breakfast, enjoy your final descent through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you will receive your summit certificate. From the gate, you will be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi for rest and celebration of your successful Kilimanjaro climb.
