About This Tour
The Shira Route is one of Kilimanjaro's most spectacular and least-traveled routes, beginning high on the western side of the mountain at the breathtaking Shira Plateau. This route offers dramatic landscapes, panoramic views, and an incredible sense of wilderness from the very first day. Unlike other routes that begin in the rainforest, the Shira Route starts at a much higher elevation, making it better suited for experienced hikers or those who have already spent time acclimatizing in Tanzania. The route eventually joins the Lemosho Route, traversing the beautiful Shira Plateau, ascending through the alpine desert, and culminating in an unforgettable sunrise at Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Shira Gate to Shira 1 Camp
Your adventure begins with an early morning transfer from Moshi to Shira Gate, where you'll complete park registration and receive a comprehensive briefing from your experienced mountain guide. From the gate, a short drive takes you to the trailhead before you begin trekking across the beautiful Shira Plateau. The route passes through open heath and moorland, offering breathtaking views of Kibo Peak, unique alpine vegetation, and expansive volcanic landscapes. As you gradually gain altitude, your guides will encourage a slow and steady pace to support proper acclimatization. Upon arrival at Shira 1 Camp, relax with a freshly prepared dinner while enjoying the peaceful surroundings and spectacular sunset over the plateau before your first overnight on the mountain.
Day 2: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
After breakfast, continue your trek across the vast Shira Plateau, one of the oldest volcanic calderas on Mount Kilimanjaro. Today's hike is relatively gentle, allowing your body additional time to adapt to the increasing altitude while enjoying magnificent panoramic views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding wilderness. Along the way, your guide will share fascinating insights about the mountain's geology, unique plant life, and wildlife. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp in the afternoon, where you can rest, hydrate, and prepare for the higher elevations that lie ahead.
Day 3: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp (via Lava Tower)
Today's trek is one of the most important for acclimatization. Ascend steadily through the alpine desert to Lava Tower (4,600 m), where you stop for lunch while experiencing the effects of higher altitude. Following the "climb high, sleep low" principle, descend into the scenic Barranco Valley surrounded by towering cliffs and giant senecio plants. This route significantly improves acclimatization and increases your chances of a successful summit. Enjoy dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall, an exciting yet non-technical scramble that rewards you with spectacular views across the mountain. Continue along ridges and valleys with dramatic scenery before reaching Karanga Camp. This shorter trekking day provides valuable time for acclimatization, allowing your body to recover while preparing for the final ascent toward the summit.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Today's hike leads to Barafu Camp, the final base camp before your summit attempt. The trail crosses rocky alpine terrain with increasingly dramatic views of Kilimanjaro's glaciers and summit cone. Upon arrival, enjoy an early hot meal before your guide conducts a detailed summit briefing, equipment check, and safety discussion. Rest as much as possible in preparation for the midnight climb to Uhuru Peak.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Your summit adventure begins shortly after midnight under a sky filled with stars. Climb steadily to Stella Point before making the final push to Uhuru Peak (5,895 metres), the highest point in Africa. Witness an unforgettable sunrise above the clouds and celebrate this incredible achievement with photographs at the summit. Afterward, descend carefully to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing through alpine terrain and rainforest to Mweka Camp, where a well-earned dinner and overnight rest await.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
After breakfast, enjoy your final descent through Kilimanjaro's lush rainforest, surrounded by towering trees, colorful birdlife, and fresh mountain air. Upon reaching Mweka Gate, you'll receive your official summit certificate and celebrate your successful Kilimanjaro climb with your mountain crew. Your driver will then transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi, where you can relax, enjoy a hot shower, and reflect on your unforgettable journey to the Roof of Africa.
