Nyungwe National Park

Your adventure begins with an early morning departure from Kigali, embarking on a scenic 5–6 hour drive through Rwanda's famous thousand hills. En route, your guide will point out terraced hillside farms, banana plantations, and sweeping valley views that define Rwanda's breathtaking landscape. Stop midway at Huye (Butare) for lunch and a brief visit to the National Museum of Rwanda, one of the finest museums in East Africa, offering rich insight into Rwandan history, culture, and traditions. Continue south through winding mountain roads as the landscape transforms dramatically — the air cools, mist begins to gather, and the ancient forest comes into view. Arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon, nestled at the forest edge with views across the canopy. Check in, freshen up, and enjoy a welcome dinner as your guide briefs you on the adventures ahead. Spend the evening listening to the sounds of the forest — the distant call of birds and the whisper of the wind through ancient trees.

Rise before dawn for an early breakfast — today is the highlight of your Nyungwe experience. Report to the park headquarters by 5:30 AM for a briefing before setting off into the forest with your experienced ranger guide. The chimpanzee trek takes you deep into the ancient rainforest, following trails carved through dense vegetation, crossing crystal-clear streams, and climbing misty ridges. When you locate the chimpanzee community, you'll spend a magical hour observing them in their natural habitat — swinging through the canopy, grooming each other, and communicating with their distinctive calls. It is one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters in East Africa. Return to the lodge for a late breakfast and short rest before heading out for the afternoon's second highlight — the legendary Canopy Walkway. Suspended 160 metres above the forest floor, this thrilling walkway offers an unparalleled perspective of Nyungwe's ancient treetops stretching endlessly to the horizon. Keep your eyes open for colobus monkeys and rare birds gliding through the canopy below your feet. End the day with sundowners at your lodge terrace, watching the mist roll in over the forest as the sun sets behind the hills.

After breakfast, lace up your boots for one final forest adventure. This morning's activity is the scenic Isumo Waterfall Trail — a moderate 10km hike through the heart of the rainforest leading to a stunning waterfall cascading down mossy rocks into a clear mountain pool. Along the way your guide will identify medicinal plants, rare orchids, and the incredible diversity of ferns and mosses that make Nyungwe so unique. On the trail keep watch for the Angola colobus monkeys — Nyungwe is home to one of the largest troops in Africa, sometimes numbering over 400 individuals, their striking black and white coats visible high in the canopy. After the hike, freshen up and enjoy a final lunch at the lodge. Before departing, stop at the Gisakura Tea Estate for a brief tour of Rwanda's famous tea production — walk through endless rows of bright green tea bushes and learn how Rwanda's premium tea is harvested and processed. Begin the scenic drive back to Kigali, arriving in the early evening with memories that will last a lifetime.
