About This Tour
The Ultimate Lemosho Wilderness Trek is widely regarded as the most beautiful route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Beginning on the mountain's remote western side, the route offers an unforgettable journey through diverse landscapes, from dense rainforest and giant heather moorlands to alpine deserts and glacial valleys. The extra days on the mountain provide excellent acclimatization, making this one of the most successful routes for reaching Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa. This route is perfect for adventurers who want spectacular scenery, fewer crowds during the first days of the trek, and enough time to enjoy the mountain while increasing their chances of standing on Africa's highest point.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
After early morning transfer from Moshi, you arrive at Lemosho Gate for registration and final briefing by your mountain team. The trek begins through pristine rainforest, one of the most beautiful and least crowded sections of Kilimanjaro. Expect rich biodiversity including colobus monkeys, tropical birds, and giant forest trees. The trail is gradual, allowing good acclimatization as you ascend to Mti Mkubwa Camp for dinner and overnight stay in the forest.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Continue trekking out of the rainforest zone into the moorland region with expanding views of the Shira Plateau. The landscape changes dramatically, revealing volcanic formations and wide open plains with stunning views of Kibo Peak. This is an important acclimatization day as you steadily gain altitude before reaching Shira 2 Camp for rest and overnight stay.
Day 3: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp (via Lava Tower)
Hike across the Shira Plateau before ascending to Lava Tower at 4,600m for acclimatization. This challenging but essential section helps your body adapt to high altitude. After lunch at high elevation, descend into the Barranco Valley, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and giant senecio plants, for overnight stay at Barranco Camp.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Start the day with the famous Barranco Wall climb, a non-technical but exciting scramble offering incredible views over the valley below. Continue along ridges and valleys with beautiful alpine scenery. This is a key acclimatization stage as you gradually approach higher altitude before reaching Karanga Camp for overnight rest.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Ascend steadily to Barafu Camp, your final base camp before summit night. The terrain becomes increasingly harsh and rocky, signaling the approach to the summit zone. Upon arrival, rest, hydrate, and receive final instructions from your guide before preparing gear for the midnight summit attempt.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Begin your summit attempt at midnight under freezing alpine conditions. Ascend slowly through Stella Point to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement, descend carefully back to Barafu for a short break before continuing down to Mweka Camp for overnight recovery after a long and unforgettable summit day.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Enjoy your final descent through lush rainforest trails filled with fresh air and tropical vegetation. Arrive at Mweka Gate where you receive your official summit certificate. Celebrate your successful Kilimanjaro climb with your team before transfer back to Moshi for hotel drop-off and relaxation.
