Learn about the forest's significance to the local communities, who have used it for firewood, rituals, and medicinal purposes for generations. Visit one of the oldest East African teak trees, used by traditional healers for rituals and believed to chase away evil spirits. Optional activity: If you're interested, spend 30-45 minutes participating in a conservation initiative by watering and managing young seedlings or planting trees to help preserve the forest. Extend your hike to the rice farms on the forest's southern edge, where local farmers use an irrigation system to cultivate over 3,000 hectares of rice plots. The lush, green landscape is a vital feeding ground for over 20 migratory bird species, including storks, jacanas, ibises, egrets, and herons, making it a perfect spot for birdwatching.
