    About This Tour

Machame Route now vies with – and indeed over the last few years has overtaken – the Marangu Route as the most popular trail. Machame is also the regarded by many guides as the most enjoyable, though it is longer and, according to most, more arduous. Despite this, the success rate on the Machame Route is higher than on the Marangu Route, possibly because the Machame is a day longer at six days and five nights (assuming you take the Barafu Route to the summit) which gives trekkers more time to acclimatize. An extra acclimatization day can – and usually is -taken in the Karanga Valley. The Machame Route also gives you the option of taking the Western Breach / Arrow Glacier Route to the summit.

    Day-by-Day Itinerary

    1

Day 1: Machame Gate Registration – Trek to Machame Camp

    10:00– 16:00

After breakfast in Moshi, you will be driven to Machame Gate for registration and final briefing with your mountain crew. The trek begins through dense tropical rainforest filled with giant fig trees, moss covered paths, and diverse wildlife. The trail is steady and scenic as you ascend toward Machame Camp, where you will have dinner and overnight in tents.

Day 2: Machame Camp – Shira Camp

    08:00– 16:00

The journey continues as you leave the rainforest zone and enter the heath and moorland landscape, characterized by giant heathers and volcanic rock formations. The trail becomes steeper and more exposed, offering stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s peaks and surrounding plains. As you gain altitude, the air becomes cooler and thinner. After a steady climb, you will reach Shira Camp, located on the vast Shira Plateau, where you will enjoy dinner and overnight rest under the mountain sky.

Day 3: Shira Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

    08:00– 15:00

Today is an important acclimatization day, as you ascend gradually toward Lava Tower (4,630m). The landscape becomes more rugged and alpine, with dramatic volcanic formations. After lunch and time spent at higher altitude, you will descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley, surrounded by giant Senecio plants and dramatic cliffs. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body adjust to altitude, increasing summit success chances. You will arrive at Barranco Camp in the evening for rest and overnight.

Day 4: Barranco Camp – Barafu Camp

    08:00– 15:00

The day begins with the climb of the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical scramble offering incredible views of Kibo Peak and surrounding valleys. After reaching the top, the trail continues through alpine desert terrain with rocky paths and minimal vegetation. As you approach Barafu Camp, temperatures drop and conditions become more challenging due to altitude. This is your final base camp before summit night. You will arrive early, rest, and prepare gear for the midnight summit attempt.

Day 5: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

    11:00– 18:00

Your summit journey begins around midnight under a sky filled with stars. The climb is steep and slow as you ascend through freezing temperatures toward Stella Point and finally Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement and taking photos at the summit, you will descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp for overnight stay.
