    About Tema

    Tema is Ghana's great modernist experiment: a city built from scratch in the late 1950s and 60s under Kwame Nkrumah to house the new nation's deep-sea port and industry. Laid out in numbered "Communities" with garden-city ideals, it remains a busy Ghanaian gateway — the harbour handles most of the country's trade, and the fishing harbour lands the catch that feeds Accra's kitchens. For travelers, Tema is a curiosity stop and a staging post more than a destination: the Greenwich Meridian passes through the city (a marker celebrates Ghana's claim to longitude zero), the port-side fish market is gloriously alive at dawn, and Sakumono's long beach fills with local families on weekends. Its real gift is position — 25 km from Accra on the motorway, and the natural jumping-off point east toward Ada Foah, the Volta estuary, and the Togo road.
