    Getting around
    Cesária Évora Airport (VXE) — 10 minutes south — flies to Lisbon, Praia and Sal. The CV Interilhas ferry to Porto Novo, Santo Antão (about 1 hour) is Mindelo's great connector. In town, walk everything; taxis and aluguers cover Baía das Gatas, Calhau and São Pedro.

    Mindelo, on São Vicente island, is Cabo Verde's cultural capital and its most seductive town — a crescent of pastel Portuguese-era streets around the deep harbour of Porto Grande, with the sphinx-like Monte Cara mountain watching across the bay. This is the birthplace of Cesária Évora, and her legacy is everywhere: in the airport's name, in the statue and museum on the seafront, and in the live-music bars where morna and coladeira are played nightly like a civic duty. The town earned its cosmopolitan streak as a 19th-century coaling station for Atlantic steamships, and it keeps a port city's openness: café terraces, a fish market in a Gustave Eiffel-attributed pavilion, art galleries, and the fiercest Carnival between Rio and the Mediterranean each February.
