Elmina

Elmina is a historic coastal town in Ghana’s Central Region, known as the site of the first European settlement in sub-Saharan Africa. Founded by the Portuguese in 1482, it became a key center of trade—particularly in gold, slaves, and later palm oil inking West Africa to global maritime routes.
