Aswan

Aswan is where Egypt turns unmistakably African. At the Nile's First Cataract, granite boulders break the river into channels around palm-covered islands, felucca sails drift past the dunes of the west bank, and the pace slows to Nubian time. This was ancient Swenett, Egypt's southern frontier and gateway to Nubia — the land of Kush, whose own pharaohs once ruled all of Egypt. Nubian culture is Aswan's heartbeat. In villages like Gharb Soheil and on Elephantine Island, houses painted in blues and ochres, Nubian languages spoken alongside Arabic, and traditions of music and hospitality carry a heritage older than the pyramids. The excellent Nubian Museum tells the story honestly — including the flooding of Old Nubia beneath Lake Nasser when the High Dam rose in the 1960s, and the displacement of a people who rebuilt their culture here. The monuments are extraordinary: Philae's island temple of Isis, rescued stone by stone from the rising waters; the Unfinished Obelisk still lying in its quarry; and, three hours south, Abu Simbel — Ramses II's colossi carved into the mountain, relocated in UNESCO's most famous rescue. End each day the Aswan way: on the water, at sunset, tea in hand.
